Chapter Ten

Lily

After spending the afternoon lounging by the pool and watching Joel with his rock-hard abs play water volleyball with his cousins, I tore myself away from the sight and snuck back to my apartment to grab my dress for the reunion. It was a pastel pink with a low sweetheart neckline and an A-line skirt.

Joel wasn’t in the room yet, so I took over the bathroom to get ready. I knew he’d cringe seeing my makeup, jewelry, and hair products spread out all over the counter, so once I was satisfied with my hair and makeup, I tossed it all back into the bag I’d hauled it in.

The door lock clicked, and Joel came in just as I was walking out. He froze and stared at me. He stood there in his swim shorts with his chest bare and a towel draped across his shoulders.

“I…uh…” he stammered. “Should get ready.”

I had to admit, I enjoyed his labored response. Perhaps this dress looked better on me than I thought.

“You have some time.” I vacated the bathroom, careful not to brush up against him as I passed. That would have been too much. I couldn’t stop smiling.

I went to sit at the table in front of the puzzle we were working on. We had the outer frame and part of the center completed.

My phone buzzed and I went over to pull it out of my purse, then brought it back to the table. My friend Samantha had texted.
